Public schools in Lafayette are home to a variety of high-quality, state-of-the-art programs and are located in and around some of the area’s top neighborhoods. The U.S. Department of Education has recognized several schools in the region as Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence for achieving high levels of academic performance, and numerous public elementary, middle and high schools earned A ratings from the Louisiana Department of Education in the 2014-15 academic year.

Students at the elementary level are able to take classes in core subjects such as arts, science, technology, math and Accelerated Reading courses, as well as participate in programs such as having their artwork featured at an exhibit in the Acadiana Center for the Arts.

Area middle schools provide students with the opportunity to learn key leadership principles, such as those included in the best-selling book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” as well as participate in programs ranging from a Renaissance community-service chapter to a 30-member jazz band. Highly-rated music programs are available at the high school level.

High school students attending public schools in Lafayette also have access to specialty programs through its Schools of Choice program. While students do not need to participate in these intensive courses in performing arts, biomedicine, health care and more, many such programs are housed right on their own high school campus.
